Master peat-free gardening by avoiding these three common planting mistakes

Avoid these three mistakes when planting peat-free | The RHS · 6:04 · Video: RHS - Royal Horticultural Society · Watch at the source

In short: Transitioning to peat-free compost is better for the environment, but it requires a shift in technique. RHS Advisor Nick Turrell explains how to navigate new soil mixes to ensure your plants thrive, drawing on the Royal Horticultural Society's experience as they move toward a fully peat-free future.

As the Royal Horticultural Society transitions its five gardens to be 100% peat-free, they are providing guidance on how to successfully use modern, environmentally friendly soil alternatives. While these new mixes are designed to meet diverse horticultural needs, gardeners often encounter pitfalls when switching from traditional peat-based products.

The RHS is also setting strict standards for its events, mandating that all show gardens and judged exhibits be 'No New Peat' starting in 2026. While a temporary concession allows for 'Peat Starter Plants' until 2028 to protect specialist nurseries, the organization is committed to a retail-wide ban on peat-based products by January 1, 2026.
