How to build a bamboo tunnel to save your garden from frost

In short: When cold air settles on clear, still nights, freezing water can rupture plant cell walls. While hardy vegetables like cabbage might survive, tender crops like basil are at high risk. You can extend your growing season by constructing a simple, effective frost protection tunnel.

Frost damage occurs through a mechanical process: as temperatures drop, the water held within a plant's leaf cells freezes and expands. When this ice eventually thaws, the structural integrity of the cell walls collapses, often leaving the plant wilted or dead. The level of vulnerability depends largely on the plant's anatomy. Succulent, tender leaves are particularly susceptible, whereas rigid plants like cabbage (Brassica oleracea cv.) possess a waxy coating that offers an extra layer of defense.

To protect more sensitive species, such as chilli plants, gardener Tino Carnevale suggests creating a protective tunnel. The goal is to provide overhead cover that traps enough warmth to shield plants from light frost. The structure can be built using metal stakes with poly piping to form arches, or by using approximately 3m-long bamboo poles, which are flexible enough to be bent into an arched shape.

Stability is key to a successful structure. By placing arched supports roughly every 50cm along the plant line, you create a consistent frame. Using bean poles or extra bamboo as cross-bracing, tied with twine, helps stabilize the tunnel against movement. For the cover, you can use specialized frost-protection fabric, which typically has a 25-40% shade rating, or even repurposed materials like an old sheet or shade cloth.

Proper management of the tunnel is just as important as its construction. If using repurposed cloth, it is best to cover the plants only when frost is specifically forecast. Furthermore, gardeners should lift the sides or ends of the tunnel during the day. This allows for essential airflow and ensures that sunlight can reach the plants, preventing moisture buildup and promoting healthy growth.
