In short: For comedian Claire Hooper, the path to the stage began in the soil. Growing up around the family’s Zanthorrea Nursery, she found that the meditative rhythm of gardening provided a grounding foundation for her unexpected career in stand-up comedy.

Raised in the Perth hills, Claire Hooper experienced a childhood defined by the landscape of her family's business. Zanthorrea Nursery, established in 1975 by her grandmother Jean Hooper, became a sanctuary of native plants and sustainability. For Hooper, the nursery was more than a business; it was a sprawling playground where she and her two brothers explored bushland and climbed trees, such as the Giant Russian Mulberry, away from adult supervision.

While her family initially viewed a career in theatre as a risky pursuit, the nursery served as a practical safety net. Hooper initially studied Occupational Therapy and even explored horticulture and garden design to find an autonomous career path that blended creativity with stability. However, her life took a definitive turn toward comedy at age 26, a transition that stood in stark contrast to the predictable labor of lifting plants and sweeping the nursery.

Despite her success in stand-up, the connection between the soil and the stage remains vital. Hooper has noted that the meditative nature of tasks like weeding, watering, and loading potting mix helped her slow down and reflect. In fact, many of her jokes were conceived while her hands were busy in the dirt. Today, she maintains her connection to nature through her Melbourne garden and a deep knowledge of botanical names, such as Chorizema cordatum.

Hooper suggests that immersing oneself in the green world is a powerful tool for creativity. Whether through the physical act of gardening or simply walking the dog, she believes that surrounding oneself with nature allows ideas to settle and flow.
