How a century of gardening fueled a life of vegetarian vitality
In short: Kathleen Golder is approaching 100 years old, yet her daily ritual remains unchanged: tending her garden. From a childhood in a gardener’s cottage to raising ten children on home-grown produce, her life offers a masterclass in the physical and mental endurance found in the soil.
Born in a gardener’s cottage, Kathleen Golder’s connection to horticulture is ancestral. Her lineage includes grandfathers who managed vast estates, such as the Peckforton Castle estate, where one oversaw 22 gardens including orchards and glasshouses. This deep-rooted expertise accompanied her 1953 migration from Manchester to Australia, where she and her late husband, Peter, navigated the challenges of raising ten children on a strictly vegetarian diet fueled by their own harvests.
The family's horticultural journey has spanned diverse climates, from the Australian outback to a vineyard in Tasmania during the 1980s. In her 70s, Kathleen was instrumental in the vineyard's early years, propagating thousands of vine cuttings. Later, in her 80s, she and Peter transitioned to South Hobart, where they transformed a quarter-acre block by replacing lawn with a productive vegetable garden that she continues to tend today.
While age has shifted her role from heavy digging to providing 'strict guidance' for her daughter, Jane, Kathleen’s garden remains highly productive. Her current crops include broccoli, leeks, lettuce, and asparagus, alongside a diverse orchard of apple, plum, pear, nectarine, fig, and apricot trees. She even finds success through unconventional methods, such as growing 15cm stalks of wasabi by simply allowing the plant to be neglected under bushes.
For Kathleen, the garden is a cognitive gymnasium. She uses the space to plan future seasons and remains an avid reader of gardening literature to keep her mind 'open to new ideas.' To maintain her crops, she employs a specific fertilizer recipe: mixing equal parts magnesium sulphate and sulphate of potash with soil, adding half a handful to each seedling during planting.
