Transform your new build garden into a thriving, sustainable sanctuary for local wildlife.
In short: The Better New Build garden, showcased at RHS Tatton Park 2024, offers a blueprint for replacing artificial grass with biodiversity. Learn how to integrate native plants, reclaimed materials, and wildlife-friendly features to create a functional, environmentally conscious outdoor space.
Designed by Nadine Mansfield, this garden concept challenges homeowners and developers to move beyond sterile, low-maintenance landscaping. Instead of artificial turf, the design utilizes gravel as a base, surrounded by native hedging and pollinator-friendly plants. Two specimen trees—Acer davidii ‘Viper’ and a multi-stem Crataegus prunifolia—provide structure and habitat for nesting birds.
The design prioritizes ecological connectivity and material reuse. Reclaimed slate in gabion seating and oak totems with drilled holes offer homes for insects and solitary bees, while strategic gaps in fencing ensure hedgehogs can navigate the space. A dual-level water feature, constructed from Corten steel and reclaimed stone, adds a sensory dimension to the garden.
