Why your garden snowdrops are far more diverse than they appear at first glance

Discover the detailed and diverse world of snowdrops | The RHS · 5:17 · Video: RHS - Royal Horticultural Society · Watch at the source

In short: While snowdrops may look identical to the casual observer, they encompass thousands of varieties with distinct characteristics. This video features horticulturist Jessica Jansdotter at RHS Garden Wisley, showcasing the surprising range of these resilient plants and explaining the biological adaptations that allow them to thrive in freezing conditions.

Snowdrops are remarkably well-equipped for winter survival. Their leaf tips are physically hardened to pierce through frozen soil, and they produce a specialized protein that functions as natural antifreeze, shielding the plant from frost damage. Despite their shared toughness, the genus exhibits significant diversity in size, color, and markings.

The collection ranges from the large Galanthus elwesii to the diminutive Galanthus gracilis, with variations including single and double-flowered types, as well as rare yellow-tinted varieties like Galanthus ‘Primrose Warburg’. Because some of these unique cultivars multiply slowly, they have become highly sought after by collectors.
