How to stop fungus gnat infestations in your indoor plant collection
In short: Fungus gnats can become a major nuisance for indoor gardeners, particularly during the cooler winter months. While overwatering often triggers these outbreaks by creating wet soil and algae, you can fight back using natural methods like predatory nematodes, specialized soil drenches, or even carnivorous plants.
Fungus gnats thrive in environments with excessive moisture. Overwatering, especially during the winter when plant irrigation needs are lower, can lead to algae growth in saucers and on the soil surface. This moisture creates a perfect habitat for adults and provides a food source, while damp soil can cause root rot, turning your plants into soft targets for gnat larvae.
To manage an existing infestation, you can use a Neem-Oil based soil drench. For a 25cm pot, apply approximately 1L of a mixture containing 30ml of Neem-Oil per 10L of water. This process should be repeated weekly for three weeks. Alternatively, you can use entomopathogenic nematodes—a specific strain of insect-killing nematodes that prey on gnats. A single standard sachet can treat 24 pots of 25cm each, with two treatments spaced a week apart usually sufficient to resolve the issue.
It is vital to choose only one method, as Neem-Oil can kill the beneficial nematodes you are trying to introduce. For a more passive approach, you can use inorganic mulch, such as pea gravel or aquarium stones, to cover the soil surface. This layer breaks the life cycle by preventing females from laying eggs in the soil and stopping mature adults from emerging. You can also use yellow sticky traps to catch adults or introduce carnivorous plants like Sundews (Drosera sp.) or Butterworts (Pinguicula sp.) to act as living fly paper.
