Why supermarket garlic is a poor choice for your home garden harvest
In short: Garlic is a low-maintenance, sun-loving crop that thrives in well-drained soil. While it is tempting to use bulbs from the grocery store, experts warn against it due to potential disease risks and poor climate suitability. Instead, choose named varieties to ensure a reliable and flavorful harvest every season.
Garlic is categorized into two primary types: hardneck and softneck. Hardneck varieties produce fewer, larger cloves and offer a more robust flavor, though they typically store for only four to six months. They are also more susceptible to bolting, which can lead to smaller bulbs. In contrast, softneck garlic features smaller, tightly packed cloves and boasts superior storage longevity, potentially lasting until the following spring if planted in the autumn.
For those who prefer a milder taste, elephant garlic is a popular alternative. Despite the name, it is not a true garlic but a relative of the leek. It produces massive bulbs with very few large cloves. If an elephant garlic plant fails to divide, it may form a single large bulb, known as a solo bulb. These can be consumed immediately or replanted the following autumn to encourage the development of a standard multi-clove bulb.
Successful cultivation relies on understanding the plant's need for a cold spell. Most varieties require one to two months of temperatures between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius to develop healthy bulbs. While autumn planting is standard, those with heavy, wet soil may find better results by starting cloves in modules before transplanting them in the spring. Regardless of the method, maintaining a weed-free environment is essential for growth.
When it comes to harvesting, timing is critical. It is generally better to harvest slightly early rather than late to maintain quality. Once pulled, garlic can be stored for many months if dried properly. By selecting varieties with an Award of Garden Merit and preparing the soil with organic matter, gardeners can enjoy a consistent supply of this Mediterranean staple with minimal intervention.
