Can you grow a harvest from garlic bought at the supermarket?

Supermarket Garlic For Seed? · 8:10 · Video: Charles Dowding · Watch at the source

In short: Charles Dowding tests whether standard supermarket garlic can be successfully planted and grown. This experiment, filmed at Homeacres, reveals the results of sowing store-bought cloves in a temperate climate.

In late autumn 2020, Dowding planted approximately 20 cloves of garlic purchased from a Lidl in Edinburgh. The cloves were sown in a polytunnel at Homeacres, where they endured winter temperatures as low as -6C (21 F) and summer highs ranging from 18 to 25 C (64 to 77 F).

During the winter months, the garlic plants were partially obscured by pea plants grown for shoots. After the peas were cleared in late April 2021, the garlic continued its development through the summer. The experiment demonstrates the viability of using common food-grade garlic as seed stock in a home garden setting.
