Grow Runner Beans for Fresh Pods or Seeds | Sowing, Harvest & No Dig Tips · 19:48 · Video: Charles Dowding · Watch at the source

In short: Runner beans are highly productive, easy-to-grow climbers that thrive in cool, wet summers. Whether you prefer harvesting tender, stringless pods throughout the season or letting them mature fully for protein-rich dried seeds, these plants offer vertical interest and a reliable harvest for both large plots and small containers.

Runner beans, known scientifically as Phaseolus coccineus, are a versatile crop that can be grown for their abundant green pods or as a source of dry beans. When harvested young, the pods are tender and stringless, but leaving them to mature on the plant allows the seeds inside to develop. These dried seeds are both delicious and nutritious, offering a high-protein, low-carbohydrate food source, though they must be boiled for at least 10 minutes before consumption.

Cultivation requires a sunny, sheltered position with rich soil. For optimal results, gardeners should incorporate at least two bucketfuls of compost or well-rotted manure per square metre. While climbing varieties are traditional, dwarf varieties reaching up to 45cm are available for smaller spaces or containers. Climbing types require sturdy supports, such as 2.5m bamboo canes arranged in A-frames, X-frames, or wigwams, to accommodate their rapid vertical growth.

Sowing can occur indoors from mid-April to May to protect seedlings from slugs and snails, or outdoors from late spring through mid-summer. Seedlings should be kept in a warm, bright spot above 12°C before being moved outside once the risk of frost has passed, typically in late May or early June. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, and consistent harvesting of green pods encourages the plant to continue flowering and producing throughout the summer and into early autumn.
