Why planting broad beans in autumn can lead to a more substantial spring harvest
In short: Broad beans are remarkably hardy, capable of surviving winter frosts to yield earlier, larger crops than spring-sown varieties. By establishing roots before the cold sets in, these plants sit dormant through winter, ready to explode into growth as soon as temperatures rise, providing a head start on the gardening season.
Broad beans, or Vicia faba, are a resilient crop that thrives in sunny, sheltered locations with rich, free-draining soil. While many gardeners associate them with spring, sowing in late autumn—specifically in October or November—is a viable strategy in milder regions or sheltered sites. In these conditions, the plants establish their root systems before winter, allowing them to remain dormant until spring. This early start often results in a more substantial harvest compared to those sown later in the year.
For those dealing with damp soil or hungry mice that might consume seeds, indoor sowing from February onwards offers a safer alternative. Seeds should be planted 5cm deep with the scar facing downwards in modular trays or small pots. Once the weather warms, these young plants can be hardened off and moved outdoors. If sowing directly into the ground, seeds should be placed 5–7.5cm deep, with spacing adjusted based on the specific variety, typically 15–23cm apart.
Maintenance is minimal, though watering is beneficial during dry spells once the plants begin to flower. To maximize yields, frequent harvesting of pods while they are still young and plump is essential, as this encourages the plant to continue producing. For gardeners with limited space, dwarf varieties—which reach about 50cm in height—are ideal for containers at least 40cm wide. Whether choosing tall varieties like Aquadulce Claudia or shorter ones like de Monica, selecting plants with an Award of Garden Merit ensures a reliable, productive crop throughout the summer months.
