Every Hass avocado you have ever eaten comes from one single mother tree
In short: The world's most popular avocado variety was not the result of a scientific breeding program. It began as a single, accidental seedling in a California backyard in 1926. Today, every commercial Hass tree is a clone of that original, resilient plant, which survived multiple grafting failures to dominate global markets.
In 1926, Rudolph Hass, a mail carrier and amateur horticulturist, purchased three seeds from A. R. Rideout in Whittier, California. One of these seeds produced a strong, unique seedling. After multiple failed attempts to graft it with Fuerte branches, Hass nearly removed the tree. A professional grafter named Caulkins convinced him to keep it, and the tree eventually produced bumpy, dark-skinned fruit that his family enjoyed. The cultivar's commercial viability was proven at the Model Grocery Store in Pasadena, where chefs purchased the fruit for $1 each—a significant sum at the time.
The Hass avocado is a genetic hybrid, composed of 61% Mexican and 39% Guatemalan varieties, according to a 2019 study by the National Academy of Sciences. Its success is driven by its high oil content, which provides a rich flavor, alongside a long shelf life and consistent, year-round yields. These traits made it vastly more profitable than the Fuerte cultivar that dominated the market in the early 20th century. By the early 2000s, the Hass variety accounted for approximately 80% of global avocado production and generated over $1 billion annually in the United States alone.
The original mother tree lived for 76 years in La Habra Heights, California, before succumbing to phytophthora, a common root rot, in 2002. Because Hass avocados can exhibit an alternate bearing pattern—where a heavy harvest one year depletes the tree's carbohydrates and reduces the next year's yield—growers rely on specific environmental conditions. Southern California provides the ideal combination of well-drained soil, consistent sunlight, and cooling ocean breezes that allow for the continuous, year-round harvesting that has made the Hass the world's most consumed avocado.
