Why soil pH is the invisible gatekeeper of plant nutrition

How does pH affect the Growth of Plants? · 6:34 · Video: Huw Richards · Watch at the source

In short: You can add all the fertilizer you want, but if your soil pH is off, your plants may still starve. The acidity or alkalinity of your garden determines whether essential nutrients dissolve into the water around roots or remain locked away in the earth.

Soil pH acts as a chemical regulator for nutrient solubility. In the right range, nutrients dissolve into soil water, making them easy for roots to absorb. For most vegetables, the sweet spot is a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. When levels drop below 6.0, vital elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium become harder for plants to access, while magnesium and calcium levels often decline.

However, extreme shifts in either direction present unique risks. Highly acidic environments (below 5.5) can trigger the release of toxic amounts of aluminum, manganese, and iron, which can damage roots. Conversely, very alkaline soils—often caused by overusing lime or wood ash—can make essential micronutrients like zinc, copper, and boron inaccessible. Some specialized plants, such as rhododendrons and blueberries, actually thrive in more acidic conditions (pH 4.5 to 5.5) because the low pH makes iron more soluble for them.

Beyond chemistry, pH governs the biological engine of the soil. Microbes responsible for breaking down organic matter and releasing nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur are highly sensitive to acidity. While fungi tend to dominate in lower pH environments, bacteria thrive in higher pH levels; a range of 6 to 7 is ideal for maximizing both. Interestingly, pH also plays a role in disease management, such as suppressing potato scab at lower levels or reducing club root in Brassicas at slightly higher levels.
