How one woman turned a realization about food waste into a national rescue movement
In short: In 2004, Ronni Kahn noticed the staggering amount of food discarded by her business. Today, OzHarvest is Australia’s largest food rescue organization, having delivered over 225 million meals. By bridging the gap between surplus supply and community need, they are tackling both hunger and the environmental impact of waste.
Australia discards 7.6 million tons of food annually, with responsibility split equally between farms, industry, and households. Ronni Kahn, who founded OzHarvest to address this, initially viewed her mission as a social project, only later realizing that food waste is a significant driver of climate change. The organization now operates from a base in Alexandria, Sydney, where yellow vans collect donated goods from across the supply chain, including manufacturers and supermarkets, to support over 2,000 charitable organizations.
Beyond logistics, OzHarvest emphasizes education through initiatives like the Feast school program and Cooking for a Cause. These workshops teach participants to maximize every part of an ingredient, emphasizing knife skills and waste reduction. Chef Mark Hamilton notes that these sessions provide both practical culinary training and a sense of dignity for those receiving the meals. The organization has grown significantly over two decades, now employing over 300 staff members and relying on a massive network of volunteers to maintain its impact.
The Alexandria site also features a volunteer-run kitchen garden, which serves as a testing ground for growing produce that is rarely donated fresh. Garden leaders Ruth Dexter and Edgar Liu focus on versatile crops like fennel, which offers edible bulbs, fronds, pollen, and seeds. By experimenting with the constraints of an industrial estate, the team demonstrates that even limited urban spaces can contribute to a circular food system, proving that every individual has a role to play in mitigating the scale of the waste problem.
