Can you survive a full year eating only what you grow?
In short: In 2019, Sonia embarked on a radical nutritional experiment: a 100% garden-based diet. It was a feat of endurance that tested the limits of self-sufficiency, proving that while a complete food forest can sustain life, true autonomy requires much more than just seeds and soil.
Sonia’s journey began roughly 15 years ago when she and her partner, Rob, started building a food garden. Eschewing a formal master plan, they adopted an evolutionary approach, planting based on convenience and proximity to their walking paths. By 2019, this gradual accumulation of edible plants culminated in a year-long challenge to derive her entire diet from the garden's output.
The experiment was not without its hardships. Sonia admits to going to bed hungry on a few occasions and experienced a significant longing for bread. However, the nutritional deficit was balanced by a profound psychological connection to the land. Her garden has since expanded into a complex ecosystem, featuring a diverse understory of pepino and nasturing, alongside a massive variety of fruit trees including loquat, wampis, bananas, citrus, mulberry, and peaches.
Success in this endeavor relied heavily on intensive soil management. Facing the difficult challenge of hard clay, Sonia and Rob transformed their land by applying approximately 150 loads of free mulch sourced from the local tip. This effort, supported by a compost bin affectionately named 'Gloria the compost pig,' has fundamentally improved the soil quality over time.
Today, the garden serves as both a personal pantry and a community resource. Sonia manages both stingless and European bee hives, planting year-round flowering species like banksia, callistemon, and grevillea to support them. Beyond her own needs, she operates an honesty-based produce stall at the front of her property, where the community's appreciation for her harvest has become so great that the surplus sales even fund her holidays.
