Why your backyard bat box needs to be rough and untreated
In short: Bats are elite pest controllers, capable of devouring massive amounts of insects in a single night. However, providing them a home requires more than just a wooden box. To attract these sensitive mammals, you must understand their specific requirements for insulation, grip, and chemical safety.
Bats are highly sensitive to scents and chemicals. When constructing a bat box, it is essential to use untreated wood that has not been pressure-treated with chemicals, as these preservatives can be harmful to the animals. Furthermore, the wood should be rough-sawn rather than smooth or planed. If the timber is too smooth, you can manually roughen the surface by dragging saw teeth across it to ensure the bats have a firm grip as they clamber inside.
The physical design of the box serves as a sanctuary for roosting, sleeping, and raising pups. A high-quality box features tight, airtight joints to prevent draughts and ideally includes two or more internal compartments. A deep cavern design is preferred because it provides a sense of security for the bats and helps maintain a more constant internal air temperature. To ensure secure access, a jagged timber piece guides them toward a slim opening located at the rear.
Placement is as critical as construction. Place the container at a height of 3 meters (10 feet) or more, ensuring it remains out of heavy gusts while receiving some daylight. Ideally, it should face between southwest and southeast with a clear flight line. To encourage occupancy, you can plant climbing foliage like honeysuckle or climbing roses nearby. Because bats and their homes are protected by law, observers should watch from a distance and look for small, dry black droppings underneath the entrance as a sign of activity.
