How a simple glass-topped box can extend your growing season

In short: When the frost arrives, most gardeners retreat. But with a cold frame, you can trap heat and humidity to protect tender seedlings and cuttings. This inexpensive, DIY solution uses basic physics to turn a chilly garden into a productive sanctuary even during the winter months.

A cold frame functions as a miniature greenhouse, utilizing a glass-topped box to capture solar energy. By trapping both heat and humidity, these structures create a stable microclimate essential for raising seeds or successfully striking cuttings. For those gardening in cool climates, the primary advantage is the ability to extend the growing season for tender plants that would otherwise perish in the cold.

The construction process relies on maximizing solar exposure and thermal mass. To begin, select a site facing as close to north as possible to capture maximum sunlight. The base of the frame should be dug out to match the dimensions of your lid. While you can use untreated hardwood or old pavers for the sides, using bricks and mortar offers a distinct advantage: bricks act as a heat bank, absorbing warmth during the day to release it later.

The lid, which can be repurposed from an old timber window frame, should be hinged to a wooden frame and angled toward the sun. This angle is crucial during winter when the sun sits low in the sky, allowing more light and heat to enter the structure. Once the walls are set and the mortar has cured overnight, fill the base with compost. As the organic matter breaks down, it generates additional heat, providing a warm medium for sowing seeds or sitting punnets of strawberries, tomatoes, or hardwood cuttings.
