How to build a functional garden feature using a single stick
In short: Transform a sunny patch of dirt into a 'Planty Shanty' with this simple structural guide. This video demonstrates how to use a single pole and some string to create a vertical garden that serves as both an ornamental feature and a source of food.
The project utilizes a 2.5m stick as a central pole to support climbing annual vegetables. By digging a 500mm deep hole and securing the pole with bricks and rocks, you create a stable foundation for a 'tee-PEA' structure. This method is ideal for quick garden features because annual vegetables grow rapidly and provide both aesthetic appeal and edible produce.
The construction involves creating a planting ring about one metre from the center pole. By tying doubled-length string from the pole to bricks spaced 40-50cm apart, you create a climbing frame. Planting seedlings on the inside of these strings allows them to grip more easily, with the structure becoming well-established in just 4 to 6 weeks.
