Ancient survivors that trade seeds for spores and shadows for strength

How to grow and care for ferns · 4:17 · Video: Gardening Australia · Watch at the source

In short: Ferns are botanical time travelers, persisting for over 360 million years without ever producing a single flower or seed. To master their growth, you must understand their unique biology: they thrive on organic richness, specific humidity levels, and a preference for the dappled light of the forest floor.

Unlike most garden plants, ferns reproduce via spores rather than seeds. This ancient lineage has allowed them to inhabit diverse environments, from swampy wetlands to dry rock crevices. In a garden setting, most varieties are prized for their fronds—leaves that famously unfurl from tightly coiled buds called crosiers. Because they are perennials, many species remain evergreen, while others are deciduous, offering seasonal shifts in color and texture. Success with ferns depends on mimicking their natural habitats. Most prefer rich soil improved with organic matter or homemade compost. For instance, the Fishbone water fern (Blechnum nudum) can tolerate some sun if protected from wind, but most require deep shade to avoid scorching. Nutrition is equally specific; because ferns are sensitive, organic fertilizers like blood and bone or fish and seaweed emulsions are preferred. During the active summer growth period, a liquid feed at one-third to one-half strength is often recommended. Maintenance requires a delicate balance of moisture and protection. Because ferns are often shallow-rooted, mulching is essential to regulate soil temperature. In indoor settings, where air can be dry, placing pots in shallow trays of rocks and water creates a humidity microclimate without drowning the roots. For outdoor care, pruning dead fronds during summer growth not only improves aesthetics but also helps reduce pest risk. Some species, like the kangaroo foot fern (Phymatosorus diversifolius), are even epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow on rocks or trees rather than in the ground.
