Because dahlias grow from underground tubers that die back in winter, protecting them from cold and wet is essential. In most of the UK, the safest method is to store tubers indoors in a frost-free location. However, in milder regions, they may survive outdoors if you apply an insulating layer of mulch.
Beyond winter care, dahlias offer incredible variety, with flowers ranging from 5cm to 30cm in diameter. Whether you are growing short bedding varieties up to 60cm or tall types exceeding 2m, understanding how to manage their tubers is the key to maintaining these bold, late-season blooms.
