The secret to a bountiful raspberry harvest lies in knowing which canes to kill
In short: Raspberry maintenance is a game of life and death. Depending on whether your variety fruits in summer or autumn, your pruning strategy must change completely. Mistaking a fruiting cane for a new shoot can cost you an entire season of delicious, juicy berries.
The fundamental distinction in raspberry cultivation is between summer-fines (floricanes) and autumn-fruiting (primocanes) varieties. Summer-fruiting plants, such as 'Chilcotin' or 'Glen Ample', operate on a single-use cycle: the canes produce fruit once and then die off. To maintain the patch, you must identify and prune these spent, brown canes while retaining the green, living ones. In contrast, autumn-fruiting varieties, like 'All Gold', are more vigorous in their regrowth, sending up fresh shoots every year that can be cut down to the ground after the harvest.
Successful establishment requires careful planting and structural support. For bare-rooted plants—which are often sold in bundles during the dormant season from autumn to early spring—it is vital to get them into the ground as soon as possible. For summer varieties, which can reach heights of about 1.8m, providing support is essential. Techniques like 'plaiting' canes can help keep them upright and separated, while spacing them roughly 30cm apart ensures adequate airflow and stability.
Environmental management further dictates success. Raspberries thrive in full sun and sheltered positions, though they can tolerate partial shade. Preparing the soil with manure and compost, and using mounded beds to improve drainage, creates an ideal foundation. To manage weeds and retain the plant's suckers, a woodchip border can be highly effective. For those with limited space, choosing compact or dwarf varieties like 'Ruby Beauty' allows for successful cultivation in containers.
