The obsessive quest to collect every species of the unique Platycerium fern genus
In short: Gardening Australia explores the private collection of Sheldon McLeod, a gardener driven by a lifelong passion for Staghorn and Elkhorn ferns. Discover how a family tradition of collecting evolved into a dedicated search for rare species within the Platycerium family.
Sheldon McLeod traces his interest in botany back to his father and grandfather, who first introduced him to the collecting bug. While the Staghorn and Elkhorn are the most recognizable Australian members of the Platycerium genus, McLeod expanded his focus after learning about the wider variety of species available globally.
The collection features diverse specimens, including Platycerium superbum, P. ridleyi, P. bifurcatum, P. andinum, and P. madagascariense. This segment, filmed in Brisbane on Turrbal and Yuggera Country, originally aired during Season 35, Episode 16 of Gardening Australia, a program dedicated to providing horticultural expertise and inspiration.
