How to design a high-efficiency irrigation system for your vegetable beds

Irrigation Made Easy: Here's how you install irrigation · 5:30 · Video: Gardening Australia · Watch at the source

In short: Automated irrigation can feel daunting, but the secret lies in simple mathematics. By calculating your water supply against the specific requirements of your driplines, you can ensure every plant receives consistent hydration. This method ensures your tap capacity can handle the total demand without overwhelming your garden's plumbing.

Effective vegetable irrigation relies on precise spacing and flow rates. For a standard setup, using dripline piping with holes spaced every 20cm allows for controlled delivery. For instance, in a 3-metre garden bed, this configuration results in 15 dripper holes per run. By spacing these pipe runs 30cm apart, a single bed can accommodate five runs, totaling 75 drippers. Each individual dripper delivers 4 litres of water per hour, meaning one bed requires 300 litres of water per hour.

The critical step in planning is ensuring your water source can sustain the total demand. If you manage five beds, the total requirement rises to 1500 litres per hour. Before installing, you must estimate your tap's supply; if your supply is approximately 2250 litres per hour, you have sufficient capacity to keep the lines pressurized. For larger plants like fruit or nut trees, a different approach is needed. Using a smaller 19mm line, you can create a circular irrigation ring around the base of the tree, using a plug at the end that can be replaced with a link as the tree expands.

The physical installation involves a structured plumbing hierarchy. Start with a 20mm PVC supply pipe running underground to each bed, controlled by an isolation valve. From this valve, a header line is run across the top of the bed. You can use T-connectors to join segments of pipe, and a helpful trick for easier assembly is to soften the pipe ends in hot water before fitting them over connectors. Secure the connections with plastic clamps and pliers, and finish the line with an L-shaped connector. To maintain the system, use isolation valves or stoppers at the ends of the driplines to allow for periodic flushing of the lines.
