In short: Stop relying on expensive, supermarket-bought herbs that wilt quickly. With a simple cane basket and the right soil mix, you can create a mobile garden that travels with you on holiday or serves as a thoughtful, homegrown gift for friends.

Creating a portable herb garden begins with selecting the right vessel. A cane basket with a depth of approximately 200-300mm is ideal. To ensure plant health, you must cut drainage holes into a liner to prevent water from stagnating. For the growing medium, use a potting mix blended with organic fertilizer and worm castings. To maintain vitality, water the basket regularly and apply a liquid feed every two to four weeks.

The variety of herbs you choose depends on your climate and maintenance preferences. For a diverse basket, consider planting oregano (Origanum vulgare), chives (Allium schoenoprasum), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), and flat-leaf parsley (Petroselinum crispum var. neapolitanum). You can even add edible flowers, such as Viola 'Johnny Jump Up', to enhance the aesthetic. While larger perennials like rosemary and sage can remain in containers for several years, others like mint thrive in moist, fertile soil but may require frequent repotting to prevent them from becoming straggly.

Success in container gardening also requires careful timing and protection. While many herbs can live outdoors year-round once established, tender varieties like basil or marjoram should be sown indoors during the spring and only moved outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. In colder regions, protect your containers from freezing by wrapping them in bubble polythene or placing them in a rain shadow. For the best results, use a balanced fertilizer to encourage leafy growth rather than potassium-rich varieties that might trigger flowering.
