Can Armenia's ancient meadows help restore the United Kingdom's lost wildflower landscapes?

Meadows of Armenia: Biodiversity lessons from an ancient landscape | Kew · 11:09 · Video: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew · Watch at the source

In short: The United Kingdom has seen a 97% decline in wildflower meadows over the last century. To find solutions, horticultural experts from Kew visited Armenia, a biodiversity hotspot, to study its resilient ecosystems and collaborate with local researchers on future conservation projects.

Iain Parkinson, who leads landscapes and horticulture at Wakehurst, explored the diverse meadow environments of the Caucasus region. This expedition aimed to gather ecological insights to inform the creation of the Silk Road Steppe, a new landscape project at Kew’s wild botanic garden.

The visit also highlighted a ten-year collaboration between Armenian botanists and the Millennium Seed Bank. By studying these ancient landscapes, researchers hope to apply lessons learned in Armenia to help reverse the dramatic loss of native wildflower habitats in the UK.
