Propagating honeysuckle is surprisingly simple when you master the art of softwood cuttings
In short: Honeysuckle is a fragrant, bee-friendly climber that roots reliably from fresh, seasonal growth. By selecting the right stems in spring or early summer, you can easily expand your garden. This technique offers the highest rooting potential, turning tender new shoots into thriving, independent plants with just a little patience.
Softwood cuttings utilize the tender, new growth produced during the spring and early summer. Because this material is highly active, it possesses the greatest potential for root development among all stem cutting methods. For species like Lonicera, which includes honeysuckle, success is often improved by taking a heel cutting—a method where the stem is pulled away from the parent plant to include a small tail of bark from the previous season's growth.
To begin, collect non-flowering shoots early in the day when the plant is fully hydrated. Trim these into 5-10cm lengths, ensuring the bottom cut is made just below a node, where natural hormones are concentrated to encourage growth. Remove the lower leaves and the soft tip before inserting the cutting into a container of peat-free compost. Using a clean, blunt stick to create a hole prevents damage to the stem base during insertion.
Maintaining the right environment is critical, as soft plant material loses moisture rapidly. Keep the compost moist and place the cuttings in bright, indirect light. A closed case or a simple plastic bag can maintain the necessary humidity, provided you ventilate the container twice weekly. Once roots form—typically within 2 to 4 weeks—gradually harden off the plants by increasing exposure to lower humidity before potting them individually. While they can be planted out after a year or two, honeysuckle remains versatile, thriving in both sunny and shaded positions.
