In a challenging corner of South Australia, Sophie attempts to transform a semi-arid landscape into a productive oasis. This tour explores her ambitious plan to plant fruit trees, vegetables, and hundreds of native species despite extreme weather and minimal rainfall.
The property is located in the Mid Murray region, roughly 80km north-east of Adelaide. Situated in a rain shadow overlooking the eastern Mount Lofty ranges, the land faces significant environmental hurdles, receiving less than 350mm of rain annually.
The project's difficulty is underscored by its location: it sits just 30km south of Goyder’s Line, the historical boundary separating arable land from non-arable territory. Success in this arid to semi-arid climate requires overcoming the inherent limitations of the landscape.
