Why your citrus tree needs a square hole to thrive

In short: Most gardeners dig round holes for new plants, but for citrus, geometry is everything. To prevent roots from circling the edges and ensure a productive harvest, a specific planting technique can direct growth outward, allowing your tree to establish a much stronger foundation.

The secret to a productive citrus tree begins long before the first fruit appears. According to commercial grower John Mills, who has worked with citrus for over 40 years, success is rooted in the planting process itself. While many enthusiasts attempt to grow citrus in pots, the most productive trees are those planted directly in the ground. To ensure the root system expands effectively, Mills recommends digging a hole that is not only twice the size of the pot but also distinctly square. A round hole risks the roots running around the perimeter, whereas a square shape directs them toward the corners, encouraging them to escape the hole and spread.

Beyond the shape of the hole, the environment must be warm, sheltered, and frost-free. The soil should be rich and well-drained, with compost added to provide nutrients. For those seeking sweeter fruit, adding potassium is a key nutritional strategy. Because citrus trees have relatively shallow root systems, consistent watering is vital; the process of producing fruit is particularly thirsty work.

Understanding the architecture of your tree is also essential. Most commercial citrus are grafted, meaning a specific fruiting variety is joined to a hardy rootstock. For home gardeners, the 'trifoliata' rootstock is often the most versatile choice. When planting, it is critical to ensure the soil is clear of both the trunk and the graft union. Gardeners must also monitor the tree for any growth emerging from below the graft, which will look distinctly different from the fruiting top. Using sharp secateurs, any such growth should be removed to maintain the integrity of the desired variety.
