How to ensure your citrus grove survives extreme frosts and heavy rains

How to plant citrus: The Ian Tolley Way · 7:45 · Video: Gardening Australia · Watch at the source

In short: Citrus can thrive anywhere in Australia, but success depends on more than just sunlight. To survive temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius or waterlogged soil, you must master the art of rootstock selection and precise planting techniques used by experts like Ian Tolley.

The secret to a resilient citrus grove lies beneath the surface: the rootstock. For environments prone to heavy winter saturation or frost, expert Ian Tolley recommends using trifoliata rootstock. This specific variety is highly adaptable and has proven successful in extreme climates, such as Japan. By selecting a rootstock already adapted to cold, you significantly increase the tree's chances of survival in harsh conditions.

Preparation begins months before the tree ever touches the ground. For optimal growth, you should dig compost and rotted chicken manure into the soil. If you are dealing with poor drainage, creating raised mounds is essential. Planting is best performed in early autumn, when the soil remains warm enough to encourage root development into the surrounding earth.

The planting process itself requires precision to avoid root stress. First, thoroughly soak the bagged tree. Excavate a pit triple the bag's volume and build a small hill at the bottom. It is vital to remove the existing potting mix from around the roots before spreading them over this mound. The ground level of the soil should align with where the roots finish.

Once backfilled gently—ensuring the soil is firm but not compacted—you must protect the young tree. Create a ring around the hole to retain water and apply a coarse mulch, such as pea straw, to allow the stem to air and prevent it from staying wet. For added protection, use a tree guard paired with 50% shade cloth secured with cable ties.
