A 41-page report on American history was condemned as 'cynical politics'
In short: In 2021, a federal commission released a report intended to define the core principles of the American founding. However, instead of being embraced as a definitive historical text, it faced overwhelming backlash from the academic community for its lack of scholarship and perceived partisan bias.
Established in September 2020 by Donald Trump, the 1776 Commission was designed to promote 'patriotic education.' It aimed to counter what it described as a 'radicalized view' of history—specifically targeting the 1619 Project and critical race theory. The commission consisted of 18 members, including conservative activists and politicians like Larry Arnn and Carol Swain, but notably lacked any professional historians specializing in American history.
The resulting 41-page document was released on January 18, 2021, just two days before the end of Trump's term. The report identified progressivism and identity politics as threats to American principles, comparing them to communism and fascism. It also criticized feminist movements and described universities as 'hotbeds of anti-Americanism.' However, historians noted that about half of the report consisted of appendices, and it notably lacked citations or footnotes identifying its primary authors.
The academic response was swift and severe. The American Historical Association (AHA), joined by 47 other historical societies, stated the work was completed without consulting professional historians. Critics labeled it a 'hack job' that relied on myths and distortions rather than rigorous study. Some historians pointed out specific inaccuracies, such as mischaracterizing George Washington’s relationship with slavery or incorrectly suggesting that Martin Luther King Jr. would have been opposed to affirmative action.
Despite its academic rejection, the commission's influence persisted. After being dissolved by Joe Biden in January 2021, various state-level laws regarding critical race theory emerged that mirrored the language of the 1776 Report. The commission was officially reinstated by Executive Order 14190 on January 29, 2025.
