In short: In the early 20th century, mentioning the word cancer in public was considered inappropriate. Today, the American Cancer Society manages a massive infrastructure of advocacy and research, but its origins lie in a desperate fight against silence, stigma, and the literal

In 1913, the organization was founded in New York City as the American Society for the Control of Cancer. At that time, the disease was so shrouded in fear and denial that public education was considered a primary barrier to treatment. The group initially focused on nationwide information campaigns to inform doctors, nurses, and families about the realities of the disease and the necessity of early detection. To break this silence, the society utilized innovative media. To prompt audiences to consult doctors upon initial symptoms, a silent drama named The Reward of Courage was ordered by them during 1921. They also published a monthly bulletin called Campaign Notes and recruited a network of volunteers, including the Women's Field Army, to wage a "war on cancer."

Today, the organization operates on a massive scale, having invested more than $5 billion in research since 1946.

In 2024 alone, they touched over 140 million lives and provided 950,000 rides to treatment. Their work now encompasses a diverse range of services, from providing 540,000 free nights of lodging in 2024 to conducting internal research aimed at addressing health disparities and inequities in cancer care. Despite this growth, the organization has faced internal shifts. In 2013, a national consolidation and cost-cutting reorganization occurred after the society raised $934 million and spent $943 million in 2012. This move centralized operations and merged regional affiliates into the parent organization. The society continues to balance these large-scale logistics with personal impact, supporting 18 million cancer survivors currently living in the United States.
