In short: From a colonial outpost to a national institution, the Anglican Church of Canada carries a legacy of shifting identities. It evolved from being the literal 'Church of England' into a distinct province of the Anglican Communion, navigating centuries of political disestablishment and cultural transition.

The history of Anglicanism in Canada is rooted in British expansion. The first service occurred around 3 September 1578 at Frobisher Bay, with a chaplain charged by Queen Elizabeth to serve God twice daily. Early propagation happened through three channels: ship officers reading the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) when no clergy were present, direct government appointments of chaplains on ships and settlements, and employment by private 'adventurous' companies.

The church underwent significant structural changes as it matured. Prior to 1955, its title remained 'Church of England in the Dominion of Canada'. In 1977, it adopted a French name, which was updated again in 1989 to l'Église anglicane du Canada. While it is now a province of the international Anglican Communion, its internal structure can be confusing: the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada is actually just one of four provinces within the Canadian church itself.

The church’s status as an 'established' institution was short-lived. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island saw it legally founded after the Constitutional Act of 1791. However, opposition from dissenters like Methodist minister Egerton Ryerson and the rise of responsible government led to disestablishment: Nova Scotia in 1850, Upper Canada in 1854, and across British North America by 1867.

Today, the church maintains a significant presence. While 3.1 percent of people (1,134,315 individuals) declared themselves Anglican during the 2021 census, the church reported having 294,931 active members across 1,978 congregations on parish rolls by 2022.
