How a road accident almost derailed the career of Britain's most successful touring car driver
In short: Ashley Sutton is the most decorated driver in the history of the British Touring Car Championship, with five titles to his name. Yet, his path to the podium was nearly cut short by a severe road car accident that forced him to step away from professional racing for over two years.
Born in 1994, Ashley John Sutton began his motorsport journey in karting at the age of six, competing from 2000 until 2009. His early transition to car racing in the 750MC Formula Vee Championship was promising, as he secured the Rookie of the Year award and finished fourth overall. However, his momentum was abruptly halted by a serious road car accident. This incident necessitated a two-and-a-half-year hiatus from the track, a period that could have easily ended his professional ambitions before they truly began.
Sutton made a remarkable return to competition in 2014, entering the British Formula Ford Championship. Despite the long layoff, he finished third in the standings, demonstrating his resilience and natural aptitude by securing five wins and 16 podium finishes. This performance served as a springboard for his 2015 success in the Renault Clio Cup UK, where he claimed the championship title. His rapid ascent continued into the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in 2016, where he immediately made his mark by winning the Jack Sears Trophy for the top-performing rookie.
Since his debut, Sutton has rewritten the record books. In 2017, he became the youngest BTCC champion since John Fitzpatrick in 1966. He went on to secure further titles in 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2026. His 2023 season was particularly historic, as he matched Alain Menu’s 1997 record by securing 12 race wins in a single year. Sutton’s technical background, rooted in his studies of auto mechanics and engineering at Birchwood High School, likely informs his precise driving style, which has allowed him to dominate the series across multiple teams and vehicle manufacturers.
