In short: Beyond measuring body fat, a specialized electrical measurement called phase angle may act as a window into cellular health. By tracking how current flows through your tissues, scientists are finding new ways to detect the invisible markers of systemic inflammation and accelerated biological aging.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (B/BIA) works by passing a weak electric current—often between 1 and 10 μA—through the body to measure resistance and reactance. While commonly used to estimate body fat and muscle mass, the technology offers a deeper look at cellular integrity through the 'phase angle'. This value reflects how effectively cell membranes act as capacitors to hold a charge.

In the context of longevity medicine, the phase angle serves as a macroscopic indicator of 'inflammaging'—the chronic, low-grade inflammation driven by visceral obesity. Low phase angle values in individuals with high visceral fat often overlap with those seen in frail elderly populations, signaling impaired membrane integrity and a loss of active cell mass.

This makes BIA a potentially vital tool for monitoring the metabolic and endocrine dysregulation that drives cellular senescence. Clinical observations in transplant recipients further demonstrate the utility of these measurements. In a study of 79 stable heart and lung transplant recipients, researchers used BIA to track body composition changes over time. They found that while both groups experienced increases in absolute fat mass during the 3–9 month post-transplant period, lung transplant recipients showed significant increases in skeletal muscle mass during the first nine months. Interestingly, in these lung transplant patients, the phase angle was positively associated with time since transplantation during that same 3–9 month interval, highlighting the method's ability to track physiological shifts.
