The massive display giant fueling the world's most advanced smartphone screens
In short: From high-end iPhones to ultra-fast gaming monitors, BOE Technology has become a cornerstone of modern electronics. As one of the world's largest producers of LCD and OLED displays, this Chinese giant is rapidly reshaping the global visual landscape, even as it faces complex geopolitical scrutiny.
Founded in April 1993 by Wang Dongsheng, BOE Technology Group began as a predecessor to the state-owned Beijing Electron Tube Factory. By making key purchases—including its 2001 acquisition of SK Hynix's OLED and STN-LCD units for US$22.5 million and the 2003 purchase of the Hydris flat-panel division for US$380 million—the firm became a world leader in smart IoT systems and interface devices.
The company's ascent has been heavily supported by Chinese local governments. In 2008, Hefei's local government invested US$3.5 billion for a controlling stake, while Beijing's government provided significant loans and converted debt into shares. By the 2020s, Chinese firms held a 40% share of the global LCD market, with BOE leading the charge. This growth has allowed BOE to supply critical components to tech giants, including being a supplier for the iPhone starting in 2021 and providing AMOLED for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
However, this dominance has brought intense legal and political challenges. In August 2025, the United States International Trade Commission ruled to ban the import of BOE's OLED panels into the US for 14 years and 8 months following a lawsuit from Samsung. Additionally, after a 2025 suggestion to investigate its military connections, the US Department of Defense included BOE on a list of Chinese military-linked firms in June 2026.
Innovation remains a core driver for the firm. In February 2022, BOE announced a prototype 27-inch gaming monitor featuring a 500 Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution. Additionally, the company's intellectual property footprint is massive, ranking 5th globally in 2023 for published patent applications under the WIPO PCT System, with 2,152 applications.
