In short: Perched on a prehistoric glacial ridge, Beverly is one of Chicago's most distinct neighborhoods. It offers a unique blend of exclusive streetcar history and modern racial integration, where high household incomes meet a deep-rooted Irish American identity, all situated on the city's highest point.

Geologically, Beverly is defined by the Blue Island Ridge. This prehistoric glacial formation was once an island in a lake and later became part of the western shore. Today, it stands as the point of highest elevation in Chicago, reaching nearly 100 feet above the Lake Michigan water line. The ridge is named for its blue wildflowers or atmospheric conditions, and it provided the unique terrain that allowed Beverly to develop as an exclusive streetcar community characterized by large lots and substantial homes.

The neighborhood's social fabric is a study in contrast and coexistence. Despite serving as a primary hub for South Side Irish residents during the early 1900s, the area is currently famed for its diverse racial makeup. It maintains one of the highest percentages of Black residents among white-majority areas in the city. This diversity is paired with significant economic standing; the median household income in 2021 was $113,824, nearly double the citywide median of $65,781.

The area's history is marked by significant transitions. Originally home to the Potawatomi people, who were forcibly removed in 1833, the land saw early non-indigenous settlement in the 1830s. It famously became a 'dry settlement' prohibiting liquor before its major growth period following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Today, the community remains a residential powerhouse, with over 78% of its housing stock consisting of single-family detached homes, a figure significantly higher than the 26% citywide average.
