Detecting microscopic mechanical failures in massive marine cooling systems
In short: Marine chillers are the heavy lifters of ship refrigeration, but identifying their subtle faults is a needle-in-a-haystack problem. Industrial vibration noise and diverse equipment types often mask early signs of failure. New AI techniques are now being used to pinpoint these incipient defects with nearly perfect accuracy.
Marine chillers remove heat from liquid coolants using vapor-compression, adsorption, or absorption cycles. In large-scale applications like commercial buildings or ships, these machines typically circulate chilled water—often mixed with ethylene glycol—to cool air via heat exchangers. Because these systems are critical for infrastructure and maritime operations, a failure in the cooling cycle can lead to significant operational downtime. Diagnosing faults in marine environments is uniquely difficult due to 'cross-equipment feature distribution shifts.' This means that data from one type of chiller (like a centrifugal model) may not easily translate to another (like a screw chiller).
Furthermore, sensor signals are often contaminated by industrial vibration noise. To solve this, researchers developed the Dual-Hybrid Attention Feature Discriminant Domain-Adversarial Network (DAFDAN).
This system uses a dual-branch encoder to handle different sensor dimensions and a hybrid attention module that amplifies fault-sensitive time-series features while suppressing irrelevant noise. The DAFDAN approach was tested using the public ASHRAE RP-1043 centrifugal chiller dataset as a source and data from a laboratory marine screw chiller as the target. The model successfully identified 15 gradient faults across five major categories with varying severity levels. In ablation experiments, the combination of hybrid attention, adversarial training, and semi-supervised learning achieved nearly 100% accuracy in cross-domain fault diagnosis. This allows for the precise identification of subtle incipient faults, ensuring that ship refrigeration equipment remains reliable even under complex marine conditions.
