The engineering behind your home's invisible climate control system
In short: Ductless heat pumps offer a sophisticated way to manage indoor temperatures without the complexity of traditional ductwork. While they appear simple to operate, the installation requires a precise sequence of mechanical, electrical, and thermal engineering to move heat efficiently between your living space and the outdoors.
The process begins with thermal load calculation, a critical first step to ensure the selected unit is sized correctly for the specific room. Once the capacity is determined, the installation moves to the physical integration of the system into the building's envelope. This involves mounting an indoor air handler and a corresponding exterior condenser unit, which are linked by a series of refrigerant lines and electrical cables. Kevin O'Connor and Richard Trethewey, a specialist in heating and plumbing, showcased this particular undertaking. They focus on heating and cooling a single room. The goal is to provide both cooling in the summer and heat during the winter.
A key technical challenge is concealing the infrastructure while maintaining structural integrity. A plastic sleeve requires a 2 5/8-inch-diameter opening to be drilled into the outside wall by the fitters. This sleeve protects the refrigerant lines and electrical wiring as they transition from the interior to the exterior. To maintain a clean aesthetic, plastic conduit is used on the outside of the house, which is then snapped shut to hide the functional components from view. The hole saw is used to bore through the exterior wall. A plastic sleeve is then inserted into this opening. This setup ensures the lines are properly shielded.
The mechanical connection involves complex routing. Copper tubing must be manipulated using a tubing bender to navigate around obstacles and reach the condenser's mounting bracket. Simultaneously, a dedicated electrical circuit must be run from the main panel to the exterior. The final assembly involves securing the condenser to its bracket, connecting the refrigerant lines, and linking the electrical cables, resulting in a system that can be managed via a remote control or a wireless clock thermostat. The final step involves securing the air handler with screws.
