Is sin a legal crime, a relational fracture, or a spiritual sickness?
In short: In Christian theology, sin is rarely just a list of bad behaviors. It is a complex architectural concept ranging from a breach of contract to a terminal disease of the soul. Depending on the tradition, sin can be a debt to be paid, a wound to be healed, or a sickness to be cured.
The study of sin, known as hamartiology, reveals three primary frameworks. Some scholars view sin through a legal lens, treating it as a violation of divine law or a breach of a non-binding ethical contract. In this view, salvation is a matter of legal reconciliation. Others, following the tradition of Augustine of Hippo, see sin as fundamentally relational—a loss of love for God replaced by 'concupiscence,' or an elevation of self-love over the divine. A third perspective, prominent in Eastern Christian churches, views sin as 'ancestral sin.' Unlike the Western doctrine of 'original sin'—which often implies a tainted nature or collective guilt inherited from Adam—ancestral sin suggests that the Fall gave humans inborn tendencies to rebel.
This distinguishes it from the Pelagian view, which argues humans are born as moral 'blank slates' (tabulae rasae) and are only responsible for their own personal choices. Sin is characterised by the Orthodox Church as a fatal spiritual malady. Instead of mere culpability, this recurring affliction warps human existence, spoils the 'Image of God', and reduces one's capacity. This perspective shifts the focus from a courtroom of judgment to a clinic of restoration, where the goal is to heal the distortion of the soul's energies and understanding.
