The only major North American sports trophy without a human name
In short: While the Stanley Cup and Vince Lombardi Trophy honor specific people, baseball’s ultimate prize remains anonymous. This unique distinction reflects a different philosophy of legacy, where the trophy belongs to the collective identity of the league rather than a single historical figure.
The Commissioner's Trophy is a unique outlier among the major professional sports leagues in North America. Unlike the Larry O'Brien Trophy (NBA), the Vince Lombardi Trophy (NFL), or the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy (MLS), it is not named after a specific individual. Instead, it serves as a symbolic representation of the entire league, featuring 30 gold-plated flags—one for each Major League Baseball team—rising above a silver baseball etched with latitude and longitude lines to symbolize the world.
The trophy's history is marked by several transitions and lost relics. Before the current era, the sport saw the Dauvray Cup (1887–1893), which mysteriously vanished, and the Temple Cup (1894–1897). The modern trophy was first awarded in 1967 to the St. Louis Cardinals. While the current design was unveiled by Tiffany & Co.
in 2000, the 1967 original was designed by Balfour Jewelers, modeled after Wrigley Field, and featured only 20 flags to represent the clubs of that time. The trophy also follows a different physical lifecycle than the Stanley Cup. While the NHL's prize is passed from champion to champion, a new Commissioner's Trophy is manufactured each year. It is a substantial piece of craftsmanship, standing 24 inches tall and weighing approximately 30 pounds. Despite its prestige, it has faced minor indignities, such as being damaged by a beer can during a 2018 parade, and even sparked a public apology from Commissioner Rob Manfred in 2020 after he dismissively referred to it as "a piece of metal." ], else: null,
