From a 19th-century law department to an Ivy League powerhouse
In short: Long before modern admissions required a high school diploma, a small department in Ithaca was laying the groundwork for a legal institution. Today, Cornell Law School stands as a global leader in international law, boasting impressive employment outcomes and a legacy of pioneering legal scholarship.
Established in 1887 as Cornell University's Department of Law, the institution has undergone a profound evolution. In its earliest days, admission standards were remarkably low, not even requiring a high school diploma. It wasn't until 1917 that two years of undergraduate study were mandated, and by 1924, the program had transitioned into a graduate degree track. The school officially adopted its current name, Cornell Law School, in 1925.
The school's physical footprint has expanded alongside its academic prestige. Originally located in Morrill Hall under Dean Douglass Boardman, the school moved to Boardman Hall in 1892. The institution shifted to Myron Taylor Hall in 1932; this decorative Gothic edifice was made possible by Myron Charles Taylor, who previously led US Steel. Recent expansions, including a multi-year project starting in 2012, have added 40,000 square feet of underground classroom space to the Myron Taylor Hall complex.
Beyond its history, the school maintains a significant contemporary impact. The Class of 2025 achieved a 100% rate of being employed or pursuing graduate studies, with a median private-sector salary of $225,000. The institution also maintains a high bar pass rate of 98.25%. Academically, the school is a hub for specialized research, housing various prestigious journals and programs, including the Legal Information Institute and the Berger International Legal Studies Program.
Looking forward, the school continues to engage with emerging legal frontiers. The Spring 2026 issue of 'Forum' is set to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and the legal profession, specifically examining how the field can harness AI's potential while maintaining the essential human judgment and ethical responsibility that defines the law.
