Beyond the header: how deep packet inspection reads your digital life
In short: Standard firewalls only check the 'envelope' of your data. Deep packet inspection (DPI) goes further, opening the envelope to inspect the actual contents. While this enables advanced security and network management, it also powers targeted advertising, internet censorship, and mass surveillance across the globe.
Traditional stateful firewalls primarily monitor the beginning and end of a packet flow, focusing on the IP header. In contrast, deep packet inspection (DPI) can look through Layer 2 to Layer 7 of the OSI model. This allows the technology to examine the payload of a message itself, identifying specific signatures within the data to classify traffic more finely than header-based methods alone.
The utility of DPI is vast and spans multiple sectors. At the enterprise level, it is used for Data Leak Prevention (DLP) and to combat threats like buffer overflow attacks, denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, and certain worms. DPI integrates intrusion prevention (IPS) and detection (IDS) features to identify complex threats that bypass conventional firewalls.
However, the technology is a double-edged sword. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use DPI for quality of service, copyright enforcement, and tiered service plans. Yet, it also enables invasive practices: at least 100,000 US customers have been tracked for targeted advertising by companies like NebuAd and Phorm, and some estimates suggest as many as 10% of US customers have been tracked this way. Furthermore, net neutrality advocates fear DPI could be used anticompetitively to reduce internet openness, while governments in North America, Europe, and Asia use it for classified surveillance and censorship.
To acquire data for inspection, technicians often use port mirroring (or Span Port) or physically insert a network tap to duplicate the data stream for an analyzer tool.
