The King who chose to surrender his own crown's power
In short: In a rare move for modern monarchs, George Tupou V voluntarily dismantled the absolute authority of the Tongan throne. By relinquishing his powers and divesting from state assets, he transformed the monarchy from an autocracy into an instrument of democratic evolution, choosing legacy over luxury.
Upon ascending the throne in 2006, George Tupou V initiated a radical restructuring of Tongan governance. He declared his intent to surrender the majority of royal authority, choosing instead to follow the Prime Minister's lead on most issues. This change transcended mere symbolism; it triggered a landmark 2010 snap vote where, initially, most Legislative Assembly seats were filled by popular election instead of royal decree or noble birth.
A major withdrawal of economic investments accompanied this transformation. Tupou V began selling off state assets that constituted much of the monarchy's wealth, completing many of these transactions prior to his 2008 coronation. This included the sale of the Shoreline Group (Tonfön) in 2007 and the Tongan royal residence in New Zealand, valued at NZ$8.9 million, which he sold in September 2010.
Although the capacity to select the cabinet and prime minister vanished, Tupou V kept control over the Judiciary plus the right to pardon inmates to maintain non-partisan status. His reign was characterized by this 'gradual transition' toward democracy, a move that earned him international praise as a visionary leader who viewed the monarchy as an architect of change rather than a static institution of privilege.
His brief reign—lasting 5 years and 189 days—was the shortest since the 1875 declaration of the constitutional monarchy. Despite his progressive stance, which drew criticism from some conservative elements due to his Western education at Oxford and Sandhurst, he successfully navigated the tension between traditional titles, like the Tuʻi Kanokupolu, and modern democratic aspirations.
