In short: While tanks capture headlines, a standardized workhorse won the war of supply. The GMC CCKW, nicknamed the "Jimmy," was the heavy-lifting hero of the Red Ball Express, moving the massive quantities of fuel, ammo, and food required to sustain the Allied advance from Normandy to the heart of Europe.

Developed between 1941 and 1945, the GMC CCKW was a 2.5-ton, 6x6 off-road capable truck designed to be the backbone of U.S. Army logistics. While the 'Jeep' is the most iconic American vehicle of World War II, the CCKW was produced in such staggering numbers that it nearly rivaled it in total volume. GMC produced approximately 572,500 units of the CCKW and its variants, accounting for 70 percent of all 2.5-ton trucks produced by the manufacturer during the war.

The vehicle's success lay in its standardized, versatile design. It featured a ladder frame chassis with three driven beam axles and a reliable 91.5 hp gasoline engine originally designed for commercial use. This reliability allowed it to serve as the primary cargo vehicle for the Red Ball Express. Its versatility was further proven by its diverse configurations: it could be fitted with a 10,000 lbf front-mounted winch, specialized fuel tankers, or even be cut in half for air transport, with the two halves bolted back together at their destination.

The CCKW also served as a platform for an unprecedented range of specialized bodies. Because steel was heavily rationed, the military experimented with wooden cargo beds before settling on a 'composite' design of steel sides and wooden slats. Beyond cargo, it supported communications, medical, and workshop roles. The vehicle's impact lasted long enough for it to stay within American military use through the mid-1960s. The M35 series, first created by REO Motors, took over its role as the primary cargo truck by the mid-1960s.
