From 19th-century shipyards to space rockets and global engine scandals
In short: Tracing its roots back to the Edo Shogunate, IHI Corporation has evolved from a local shipyard into a global engineering giant. Today, the Japanese firm manages everything from space launch vehicles to massive marine engines, though recent revelations have cast a shadow over its technical integrity.
IHI Corporation's origins date back to 1853, when the Ishikawajima Shipyard was established by the Mito Domain under orders from the Edo Shogunate. This move was a strategic response to the pressure of the Perry Expedition and the need to compete with global powers. Since then, the company has undergone significant transformations, including the 1960 merger of Ishikawajima and Harima to form Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.
The company's modern portfolio is vast, spanning aerospace, marine, and industrial engineering. IHI develops aero engines through partnerships with giants like Rolls-Royce Holdings, GE Aviation, and Pratt & Whitney. In the space sector, it contributes to various launch vehicles, including the S-type Sounding Rocket and the SRB-A solid rocket booster for the H-IIA/H-IIB launch vehicles.
However, the company has faced significant scrutiny regarding data integrity. In February 2024, a whistleblower triggered an investigation into IHI Power Systems Co., a subsidiary. By April 24, 2024, the company confirmed that the subsidiary had been falsifying fuel consumption and efficiency data for engines used in ships and trains. Allegedly starting in 2003, this malpractice has impacted roughly 4,361 engines globally, triggering an inquiry by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Despite these challenges, IHI remains a cornerstone of Japanese heavy industry. It has historically been involved in significant maritime achievements, such as building the Mutsu in 1969, Japan's first nuclear-powered ship. While it halted manufacturing nuclear reactor parts in 2018 to focus on aircraft components, its influence remains deeply embedded in global transport and aerospace infrastructure.
