Is morality about the results you achieve or your duty?
In short: In the world of ethics, a fierce debate exists: does an action's value lie in its consequences, or in the principle behind it? Immanuel Kant proposed a radical shift, suggesting that fulfilling our moral duty is the only thing that truly matters for determining right from wrong.
Kantian ethics, rooted in the work of 18th-century philosopher Immanuel Kant, centers on the idea of duty as the primary driver of morality. Unlike systems that judge actions by their outcomes—such as how much happiness or safety a choice produces—Kant's framework asks whether we are acting out of a sense of obligation to a universal moral law. This approach seeks to define what it means to do the 'right thing' regardless of the specific situation or the unpredictable results that might follow.
The broader movement known as Kantianism is not a single, rigid doctrine but a loose assemblage of diverse philosophies. These schools share a 'family resemblance' based on Kant’s critical spirit: an opposition to dogmatism and irrationalism in favor of exploring the limits of human knowledge. They often examine how the mind imposes its own structure on experience, seeking a priori structures—logical foundations independent of our senses—that make both knowledge and moral action possible.
Kant's work is famously syncretic, blending seemingly opposing traditions into one system. He integrated British empiricism (the role of experience in knowledge) with the scientific methodology of Isaac Newton and the metaphysical rationalism of Christian Wolff and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. By synthesizing these influences, Kant attempted to raise philosophy to a level of rigor similar to mathematics or physics, creating a framework where morality is not just a feeling, but a logical necessity.
