In short: In 1927, an engineer looked at a topographic map of the Saluda River Valley and saw something others missed. By tracing a single contour line, he identified a site that would become the world's largest man-made reservoir, transforming a rural landscape into a massive hydroelectric powerhouse.

The creation of Lake Murray was a feat of engineering and logistics. In 1930, the Saluda Dam (officially the Dreher Shoals Dam) was completed. At the time, it was the largest earthen dam in the world, constructed using native red clay soil and bedrock. The project was spearheaded by William S. Murray, who realized that the 360-foot contour line of the Saluda River Valley provided an ideal expanse for a dam that could generate enormous power at a low cost.

The scale of the project was unprecedented. To create the reservoir, which covers approximately 65,000 acres, the Lexington Water Power Company had to secure about 100,000 acres of land. Approximately 5,000 individuals had to be moved, while 193 cemeteries housing 2,323 tombs, alongside six educational buildings and three places of worship, were cleared away. Despite the destruction of smaller rural micro-communities, the project was notable for the cooperation of local landowners, many of whom remained in the vicinity to continue farming.

The construction was a massive industrial undertaking. Between 1927 and 1928, 2,000 men were employed to clear woodland up to the high-water mark, producing approximately 100 million board feet of lumber from the site itself. The lake now serves as a major source of hydroelectric power and a recreational hub for fishing and boating, while also serving as a silent graveyard for history, including several B-25 Mitchell bombers that crashed into its depths during World War II training exercises.
