Liver function tests reveal more than just liver health
In short: A simple blood test can show how well your liver is working, but results often reflect more than just liver health. Understanding these numbers can help spot potential issues early, as abnormal results may stem from diet, medications, or other health conditions.
Liver function tests, or hepatic panels, are blood tests that measure how well the liver is functioning. These tests are not always definitive for liver disease, as some abnormal results can be due to other factors like diet, medications, or other health conditions. The liver plays a critical role in producing blood plasma proteins such as albumin and clotting factors, and in processing bilirubin, a waste product from red blood cell breakdown.
Normal albumin levels range from 40 to 60 grams per liter, and low levels can indicate liver disease, but they may also result from poor nutrition, malabsorption, or protein loss in urine. Similarly, the prothrombin time (PT) test measures how long it takes for blood to clot, with a normal range of 10.9 to 12.5 seconds. A prolonged PT may suggest liver damage, but it can also be caused by vitamin K deficiency, bleeding disorders, or the use of blood-thinning medications like warfarin.
When liver cells are damaged, enzymes like AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT are released into the bloodstream. These enzymes are used to assess the extent of liver damage, with higher levels indicating more severe damage. However, some enzymes are also found in other tissues, so abnormal results may not always point to liver disease. GGT is more targeted towards biliary issues, whereas ALP is found in bones and the placenta, with its concentration increasing during childhood, pregnancy, or as a result of other conditions such as bone disorders or kidney failure.
Understanding the context of these results is crucial. The liver’s role in metabolism and detoxification means that its function can be affected by a wide range of factors. A hepatic panel is just one tool in assessing liver health, and it should be interpreted alongside other clinical findings and patient history.
