In short: Liver function tests measure enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin to assess liver health. These tests can signal damage, but they also reflect other factors like diet, medications, and non-liver conditions. Understanding what each result means is key to interpreting liver health accurately.

Liver Function Tests (LFTs), or hepatic panels, are blood tests that measure various markers to assess liver health. These include enzymes like AST and ALT, proteins like albumin, and bilirubin levels. The liver plays a critical role in synthesizing these proteins and processing bilirubin, making these tests essential for diagnosing liver damage or dysfunction.

The liver's synthetic role is determined by its capacity to generate plasma proteins, including albumin and coagulation factors. Serum albumin tends to decrease in all liver conditions, though it can also be reduced by inadequate diet, poor absorption, or protein excretion in urine. This highlights the importance of considering other factors when interpreting results, as low albumin does not always indicate liver disease.

Prothrombin time (PT) measures how long it takes for blood to clot, reflecting the liver's ability to produce coagulation factors. A prolonged PT can indicate liver dysfunction, but it may also result from vitamin K deficiency, bleeding disorders, or the use of anticoagulants like warfarin. This underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to diagnosing liver-related issues.

When liver cells are damaged, enzymes like AST and ALT are released into the bloodstream. While both are liver-specific, ALT is more sensitive and specific for liver damage. However, elevated levels of these enzymes can also occur due to non-liver causes, such as muscle injury or heart disease. This complexity requires careful interpretation of LFT results in clinical practice.
