In short: Founded in 1868, the Manchester Evening News evolved from a local election campaign tool into a powerhouse that kept The Guardian afloat for decades. By dominating provincial readership, this regional daily generated the essential cash flow that sustained its famous sister title through years of significant financial instability.

The Manchester Evening News was established on 10 October 1868 by Mitchell Henry to support his parliamentary bid. Though Henry soon lost interest, the paper found a long-term home under the ownership of the family behind the Manchester Guardian. By the 1930s, under editor William Haley, the paper reached a circulation exceeding 200,000, becoming the largest provincial evening newspaper in the country. This success made it a vital cash cow, with Haley’s salary even surpassing that of the company owner, John Scott.

The financial relationship between the two titles was profound. As the Guardian and its Sunday counterpart, the Observer, faced daily losses of £100,000, the Evening News provided the necessary capital to keep the group operational. This dynamic shifted in 2010 when the Guardian Media Group sold the paper to Trinity Mirror for £44.8 million. The sale was a strategic move to offset the parent company's mounting losses, effectively severing the historic link between the two publications.

Beyond its financial role, the paper was known for its unique production methods, including the famous 'Football Pink' edition, which was printed on colored paper and updated using mobile presses near stadiums. Despite its 'evening' branding, the paper adapted to changing markets by launching a morning edition in 2004 and eventually embracing a digital-first strategy in 2014. By 2013, it had surpassed 10 million monthly online visitors, marking a transition from its origins as a small, four-page local publication.
